Principal Data Engineer

Job Description:

What if your next data engineering challenge wasn't building one more solution - but shaping how 150 data engineers build theirs? At Tryg, we are bringing our analytical, AI and pricing landscape together around Databricks and building a stronger, shared engineering foundation across Scandinavia.

We are looking for a Principal Data Engineer to define what great Data Engineering looks like across Tryg - and turn those principles into frameworks, tooling and ways of working that engineers use.

You will get a broad technical mandate, significant autonomy and the opportunity to shape how Data Engineering develops across Tryg.

About the role | Shape Data Engineering across Tryg

As Principal Data Engineer, you will lead the development of Data Engineering Excellence across Tryg. Your focus goes beyond solving individual engineering challenges. You will establish the standards, reference solutions and reusable patterns that enable our teams to build reliable, scalable and maintainable data solutions.

Working closely with Platform Engineering, Lead Data Engineers, Data Architects and Principal colleagues across AI and Pricing, you will:

  • Define and evolve engineering standards across development, testing, CI/CD, observability, documentation, dependency management and the use of GenAI.
  • Develop reference implementations and reusable patterns that can be adopted across teams.
  • Co-create frameworks, automation and platform capabilities with Platform Engineering.
  • Help shape Tryg's core data architecture and engineering principles.
  • Drive adoption and raise technical maturity through guidance, coaching and knowledge sharing.

A key part of your role is turning technical direction into real change. Success isn't a standard documented somewhere - it is better engineering practices becoming part of how 150+ data engineers work.

The role is an individual contributor but participates in the Data Enablement leadership team; to ensure long term decisions are anchored with deep engineering knowledge.

About you | A strong engineer who makes other engineers better

You have a strong technical background and have spent a significant part of your career designing and building complex, production-grade data solutions. Over time, your perspective has expanded from solving individual engineering problems to improving how engineering is done across teams.

You are comfortable with ambiguity. You can structure complex problems, bring together different perspectives, evaluate trade-offs and make technical decisions when alignment cannot be reached.

We imagine that you bring:

  • Strong Data Engineering and software engineering fundamentals.
  • Experience establishing engineering standards, frameworks or reusable patterns.
  • The technical depth to make difficult decisions and explain the trade-offs behind them.
  • Experience influencing senior engineers and technical leaders across teams.
  • Experience driving adoption at scale - not simply defining standards but changing how teams actually work.
  • Ability to think in systems – not just for technical challenges, but also how you solve interaction with large communities

Experience with Databricks, modern data platforms and cloud engineering is highly relevant. Experience from a regulated organization is an advantage, but not a requirement.

You don't need to be the deepest specialist in every data discipline. Your focus will be engineering excellence: how we design, develop, test, deploy, operate and continuously improve data solutions on a large scale – both in data volumes and complexity.

About us | Build the foundation while it is still being shaped

Tryg is one of Scandinavia's largest non-life insurance companies, serving more than 5 million customers across Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

You will join Data Enablement and become part of our strategic technical leadership. Strong engineering practices already exist across Tryg - your opportunity is to help turn the best of them into common approaches that can scale across teams.

There is no finished blueprint waiting for you to maintain. Many of the foundational choices are still being made, giving you the opportunity to leave a significant fingerprint on how Data Engineering is done at Tryg for years to come.

Employee benefits | Something to look forward to

At Tryg, we offer attractive conditions and employee benefits, including:

  • An attractive pension scheme.
  • General bonus programme.
  • Health and dental insurance.
  • Five weeks of holiday, five additional holiday days and four extra days off.
  • Flexible ways of working with trust and responsibility.

You will also become part of a strong professional community with highly skilled colleagues across Tryg.

Recruitment process | Show us how you think
As part of the recruitment process, you will work with a case based on an open engineering challenge. We are less interested in one theoretically perfect answer and more interested in how you approach ambiguity, evaluate technical trade-offs and turn technical direction into something that can successfully be adopted at scale.

We look forward to hearing from you
Send us your application and CV no later than 28 October 2026. We encourage you not to include a photo in your CV.

We review applications continuously and will close the recruitment process once we have found the right candidate.
